In 2012, Michael Vaughan completed an ambitious trek across China, raising an incredible ÂŁ215,000. His efforts helped fund a cutting-edge surgical tool that is transforming theatre procedures at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
Known as the brain lab, the equipment creates a live, three-dimensional map of the area being operated on. This allows surgeons to navigate with pinpoint accuracy during complex brain surgery and tumour removal.
Mr Hesham Zaki, Consultant Neurosurgeon, explains: “It’s like a GPS system for the brain. We can identify the safest and most effective route to a tumour and make smaller incisions.”
This means children can benefit from shorter procedures, quicker recovery times and improved long-term outcomes.
