New Hospital Wing

From colourful artwork to private therapy spaces, the new hospital wing is packed with enhancements made possible thanks to your generous support of the Make it Better appeal.
New Hospital Wing

You may have noticed a few changes around here. Thanks to everyone who donated and raised money for the Make it Better appeal, paediatric care at Sheffield Children’s Hospital has been transformed for generations of children to come.

The new wing opened in phases, beginning with the Outpatient Department in 2016, followed by the wards in 2018. The changes have had a lasting impact, and here are just a few of the ways your support made a difference:

  • 13 clinical treatment rooms were created, including the Action Lab, Growth and Measurement Suite, Plaster Room and Occupational Therapy Room. Each space was sponsored by generous companies and supporters.

  • 46 single bedrooms and 6 four-bed bays were built, designed to feel welcoming and comfortable, far from the look and feel of a typical hospital room.

  • Bedhead entertainment systems were installed following feedback from patients and families, 73% of whom wanted a TV with the option to connect a mobile device using WiFi. The charity funded 72 units, with each system costing around £3,000.

  • A Play Tower was constructed at a cost of £400,000 to bring fun and distraction into the hospital environment. This space gave patients somewhere to play and explore away from the wards.

  • Two outdoor play areas were also funded with £400,000, providing children and their families with safe and secure outdoor spaces for fresh air and relaxation.

  • A digital X-Ray machine was added to the new Outpatients area, thanks to a £250,000 donation from Westfield Health. The state-of-the-art system produces X-rays in just four seconds, improving both speed and experience for young patients.

  • Therapy equipment was funded with £72,000 raised by supporters through sponsored walks, runs and swims. This made it possible to create two dedicated Therapy Rooms, providing private, well-equipped spaces for physiotherapy and occupational therapy.

  • Artfelt, the hospital’s arts programme, added artwork and colour throughout the wing. Artists were commissioned to create engaging, character-based designs for rooms like the Plaster Room and Blood Test Room, as well as interactive pieces to entertain children while they wait.
