Cancer and Leukaemia ward

Thanks to your support, we raised £2.75 million to transform the Oncology and Haematology ward at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

The newly redeveloped ward cares for children from infancy through to age 19 and is one of only twenty principal treatment centres for cancer and leukaemia in the UK. The ward has been completely redesigned to offer space, privacy and natural light, turning isolation into a place of calm and comfort. The layout includes four single patient rooms, six isolation rooms with en-suite facilities, a four-bed bay with an assistant bathroom and a two-bed bay, each designed to feel more personal and homely, with space for toys and for a parent to stay comfortably.

Artfelt, the hospital’s arts programme, worked with Field Design Agency and local artist Chris Jarratt to shape a space that feels welcoming and familiar. The design, developed through consultation with families and staff, includes interactive magnetic walls in patient bedrooms, engaging artwork in shared areas and a relaxed environment for teenagers to socialise.

In addition, £20,000 funded the installation of immersive technology in the ward’s playroom. This cutting-edge equipment allows children to interact with digital environments, from popping virtual bubbles to exploring familiar places like their homes or joining a birthday party. It can even bring loved ones into the room virtually, helping children stay connected to the outside world during long hospital stays.
