Artwork by designers Thomas.Matthews brings calm and cohesion to the theatre corridors, helping children feel more at ease as they head into surgery.
Theatres

Works by designers Thomas.Matthews line the theatre corridors to provide distraction for children during the anxious moments before they are anaesthetised. The focus of the work was to create something that would not only complement the state-of-the-art new theatre suites, but also bring cohesion to both the old and new parts of the department.

Patients range in age from birth to 16 years, so the scheme operates on multiple levels, offering tools for improvisation and dialogue without being patronising to older children. The art culminates in focal light boxes in the ceiling of each new anaesthetic room and a colourful mobile along the route to the new 3T MRI scanner.
