Supporters have helped to fund two key roles at Sheffield Children’s.
Tobias Weller, aged 10 from Sheffield, was inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore to take on a series of challenges during lockdown, raising over £150,000. Tobias, who has cerebral palsy and autism, split the funds between his school and the hospital.
One of the new roles funded is a two-year Children’s Exercise and Physical Activity Therapist post, based at Ryegate Children’s Centre.
The role helps children like Tobias to achieve their physical activity goals. It also promotes the benefits of exercise for all children with disabilities, offers group activity sessions, builds links with local clubs and community providers, and organises physical activity and sports events in collaboration with the Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy teams.
Physiotherapist Fran Lee said:
“The role will be a really welcome addition to the team. It will give young people under our care the opportunity to pursue new goals, explore their potential, and see what they can achieve. I’m excited to see the difference it will make.”
Support has also funded a Data Manager in the Oncology and Haematology team. This team holds the hospital’s largest research portfolio of interventional studies. Many of these offer treatments only available at selected sites across the UK, and expanding this portfolio means more children in Sheffield can access cutting-edge treatment options closer to home.
Funding was provided to support 50 percent of the Data Manager role for 12 months, allowing the team to broaden the scope of studies available.
